A single plastic item is often seen as a proof of innovation; yet, it could be something else—a threat or change. For several years, communities around the world have been combating the dangers that plastic waste brings to the conservation of nature. Among the institutions promoting environmental responsibility is Tangub City Global College (TCGC) in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental Philippines.

Tangub City Global College (TCGC), through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office, has implemented a policy banning single-use plastics in order to reduce waste within the campus. This initiative started in early 2021 and has been strengthened in the following years. Through this program, the college aims to significantly minimize plastic waste produced in daily school activities. Reducing plastic consumption also helps decrease harmful greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO?) and methane (CH?), which are released during the production, transportation, and disposal of plastic materials.

The policy prohibits the use of plastic bags, straws, disposable cups, plastic cutlery, sachets, Styrofoam containers, and other single-use plastic items within the school premises. Additionally, delivery parcels are discouraged or restricted inside the campus because they often come with bubble wrap and excessive plastic packaging that contribute to waste accumulation.

As part of the implementation of this environmental initiative, the college community is encouraged to practice responsible waste management and sustainable consumption. Students, faculty members, and staff are advised to bring their own tumblers, reusable food containers, and reusable utensils instead of relying on disposable materials. This simple practice helps reduce the amount of waste generated each day while promoting a culture of environmental awareness within the campus.

Furthermore, school cafeterias and food concessionaires are encouraged to prioritize the use of eco-friendly, food-grade, and biodegradable packaging materials. These materials ensure both food safety and environmental sustainability. Acceptable alternatives include food-grade paper containers, cardboard packaging, and reusable serving materials that effectively seal food and prevent contamination. In many school canteens, reusable plastic plates and metal cutlery such as spoons and forks are commonly used to support this initiative.

Through these combined efforts, Tangub City Global College demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship. By reducing plastic consumption and encouraging sustainable alternatives, the institution not only protects the environment but also educates students to become environmentally conscious individuals who can contribute to a greener and healthier future.
